Student Support Teams
OverviewStudent support teams (SST) provide a vehicle to develop interventions to support the academic success of students who present a struggle to achieve academically or who present behavior concerns which may impede their academic achievement.
The student support teams follow the procedures of the Georgia Board of Education Rule 160-4-2-.32. The student support team operates at “Tier 3” of the four tier organizational framework of the Georgia Student Achievement Pyramid of Interventions. SST addresses academic, behavioral, and/or social-emotional concerns. Each school or center has an SST team chairperson. SST records are maintained as part of the TIENET® technology document management application. The SST chair monitors the process at the local school level.
There Are Six Basic Steps:
- gathering of information
- assessment and evaluation of data
- development of educational plan
- implementation of education plan
- evaluation of progress
- ongoing monitoring and evaluation
A referral to SST requires documentation of a student’s failure to demonstrate adequate response to interventions. Currently the documentation requires a minimum of four data points that reflect a trend over a minimum of a twelve week period. SST develops research-based interventions for the individual student to support progress. SST is a collaborative approach—parents are an integral part of this process and are invited to attend and actively participate in the process. The SST varies from school to school and is a fluid group made up of staff and support personnel from each school. The team includes, but is not limited to, teachers, administrators, parents, and the school psychologist.
- the student receives hearing and vision screening
- a referral is received by the SST chair
- a meeting is scheduled (if prior interventions and progress monitoring from “Tier 1” and/or “Tier 2” is submitted)
- notification of the time and date of the meeting is sent to the parents and team members
- a formal SST meeting is held to discuss the concern using a problem solving format
- interventions are generated with frequency and duration determined (additional data documentation and progress monitoring is determined)
- a follow-up meeting is scheduled to review the data
